NURSES FOR OTHERS
Here is my contribution to the request of our hospital's in-service education to write an abstract on the topic NURSING EDUCATION AND HUMAN RESOURCES IN FACING CHALLENGES. Whether it is accepted or not I made myself clear that Nursing is here to stay and Nurses are meant to serve others.
Abstract:
Florence Nightingale ignored the wishes of her daunting parents to live a lavish lifestyle but instead committed herself in working for the sick and the deprived. Today her legacy lives on as millions of sick people around the globe are benefiting from her notable nursing works.
The nursing education revolutionized into an important philosophy and a major discipline since then. It aims to improve the health condition of the sick ones aside from equipping nursing students a strong foundation of the fundamentals of nursing. We witnessed various improvements in the delivery of nursing health care in many nursing institutions.
We see the rise of many nursing specializations to specifically care specific ailment. From the infirmary to the more complicated cases in various surgical procedures nurses are there to assist or even suggest physicians and surgeons to correct many health problems.
Nurses are considered as major factor in lifting the well-being of the patients. We give total care from admission to the discharge of the clients. We manage our work independently without being detached from other health care professionals. We deal many illnesses with utmost discipline based on sound knowledge and practices.
More and more aspiring students are taking nursing as their chosen career. In United States alone the workforce of the nurses are constantly increasing each year to cater the needs and demands of many hospitals. In countries like the UK, India and Australia they produced highly qualified nurses to perform various roles in many hospital settings.
However, a disheartening reality challenges the nurses today. The advent of modern technology did not lessen the number of the sick people. Instead a large number of individuals are stricken with many infectious diseases. Big percentages of deaths are revealed without receiving proper medical or nursing care.
The fact remains that major diseases such as AIDS, certain types of leukemia and other cancers are incurable till this time. Major depression like manic-depressive disorder continues to challenge our understanding of the disease. These prove that we have a long way to go.
Believe it or not many nurses are not contented in their workplace. Most would say that they have unsuitable working place or low compensation package, hence; they resign from their assigned posts.
Looking back at how the nursing profession began, the founder bequeathed to the pioneering students first and foremost how to maintain proper hygiene and prevent the spread of infection. It is not a difficult task if we keep in mind the goal of freeing anyone from getting infection.
Sad to say, the settings of today are made complicated by the advancement of medical breakthroughs and the discovery of many diseases. It is a tall order for many nursing institutions to control many ailments and maintain an organized health care system that could attend both the critically or chronically ill patients.
We are heading towards a more intricate process of solving many problems vis-s-vis the nursing education. Our sole goal is to continuously gain knowledge, upgrade our skills and maintain an upright attitude towards a meaningful and effective nursing care.
During Florence Nightingale time she made her own solitary rounds checking the wounded soldiers if they were still okay. Her mere presence lifted up many patients because of how she sincerely showed genuine concern. Perhaps to review her Notes on Nursing could bring back or sustained our passion to improve our medical and nursing education.
